  Bath Abbey is one of the most impressive historic buildings in the city and a landmark that’s impossible to miss while exploring central Bath. The current abbey stands on a site that has been associated with Christian worship for well over a thousand years. Several churches have occupied this location over the centuries, culminating in the magnificent Gothic building visitors see today. One thing that surprised me was learning that Bath Abbey is often described as the last great medieval church built in England. When you stand beneath its soaring windows and intricate stonework, it’s easy to see why it remains one of the city’s defining landmarks. As the author of The Grant Colson Thriller Series, I enjoy locations where layers of history overlap, and Bath Abbey sits at the center of centuries of English history. The building itself contains evidence of ongoing preservation, with repairs and restoration work from different eras visible throughout the structure. During my visit, an organist was practicing inside, and hearing the music echo through the abbey added a completely different dimension to the experience. The sound filled the space in a way that made it easy to imagine how powerful a full service or concert would be. As someone who also enjoys piano and music, I couldn’t help wondering what it would be like to play an instrument of that size and power. It would be a very different experience from sitting at a piano. The abbey sits beside Kingston Parade and directly adjacent to the famous Roman Baths, placing it at the heart of Bath’s historic center. Together, the abbey, the Roman Baths, and the surrounding streets create a fascinating blend of Roman, medieval, and modern history. The staff and volunteers were welcoming, and the building is very accessible for visitors. Whether you’re interested in architecture, history, music, or simply beautiful buildings, Bath Abbey is one of the highlights of the city and well worth visiting.

  The Tower Tour was such fun! We got to climb to the top of the Abbey and even ring the bells. You must reserve early because this one fills about a week or two ahead of time. You can still see the Abbey if you can’t reserve early, but the Tower Tour makes it extra special. Jasper and Toby gave a great tour. Lots of stairs. Wear sturdy shoes - no flip flops allowed on this tour.
