A UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, it is approximately 3.8 kilometres (2.4 miles) long, composed of 666 arches. The covered walkway was built to protect pilgrims and an important icon of the Virgin Mary during an annual procession from the city center to the sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca at the top of the Colle della Guardia (Guardia Hill). Walking the portico is a significant local tradition, and a popular activity for visitors. The walk is not easy but well rewarded at the top, offering scenic views of Bologna and the surrounding protected landscape.
