Beautiful Cathedral. Famous for its altar piece, the mystical lamb. I recommend doing the virtual reality tour in the crypt downstairs first. It’s well done, not too expensive nor long and you get to hear about the history of the altarpiece so you’ll get to appreciate it it better. Beyond that, beautiful architecture and art throughout. If you love art or history, this is pilgrimage-worthy. St. Bavo’s houses the Ghent Altarpiece, arguably the most important painting of the Northern Renaissance. The 2020 restoration revealed Van Eyck’s original colors and that intense, human-eyed Lamb. Beautiful cathedral right in Ghent center. Free to walk around and it’s gorgeous inside — tall ceilings, cool stained glass, very peaceful. The Mystic Lamb experience costs extra but do it. The headset tells you what you’re looking at and the story of how it was stolen by Nazis and recovered is wild. Plan ∼1 hour. One of the best things we did in Belgium. Closed on Sunday mornings for Mass — check times if you want to see the lamb.
