The Wallraf-Richartz Museum is one of Cologne’s most important art museums and a great stop for anyone interested in European art history. Its collection covers around 700 years of art, from medieval painting and Baroque masters to 19th-century art and Impressionism. The museum was originally opened in 1861 and has been housed in its modern building since 2001. Highlights include works by artists such as Rubens, Rembrandt, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and van Gogh, as well as one of the leading collections of medieval painting. Its central location makes it easy to visit together with Cologne’s Old Town and the cathedral. A rich, well-organized and very worthwhile museum.

Cologne’s oldest museum and the one most worth slowing down for. The collection runs from medieval panel painting to French Impressionism — not a random range, but a coherent argument about how European painting developed over six centuries. The medieval section alone justifies the visit: Cologne School works from the 14th and 15th centuries that you won’t find concentrated like this anywhere else. The Impressionist floor has Monet, Renoir, Sisley. What makes it work is scale — the collection is large enough to be serious, small enough that you don’t lose track of where you are. On the first Thursday of every month, entry is free. On any other day, the ticket is worth it.
