★★★★★Edited 4 months agoHeroes' Square at the northeastern end is dominated by the Millennium Monument (Millenniumi emlékmű). The monument was built in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian Conquest and thus the founding of the Hungarian state. The monument consists of a 45-meter-high column topped by the Archangel Gabriel, holding a patriarchal cross and the Crown of St. Stephen, both in gold. At the foot of this column stands a group of equestrian statues of the seven Magyar chieftains, led by Prince Árpád. At the rear, the column is flanked by two curved colonnades containing fourteen statues of Hungarian heroes. Originally, statues of nine Hungarian and five Habsburg kings stood here (at the time of construction, Budapest was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy led by the Habsburgs). The Hungarian kings are still there, but the Habsburgs were replaced by five Hungarian figures during the time of the Hungarian People's Republic. On top of the two colonnades stand four allegorical statues representing Labour & Wealth, War, Peace, and Knowledge & Glory. A beautiful and impressive monument that is itself now more than a century old!
