The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is one of Guangzhou’s finest architectural treasures and a remarkable showcase of traditional Lingnan craftsmanship. Completed in 1894, it was built by members of the Chen family from 72 villages across Guangdong Province. Originally, it served as both a residence and a study hall for young clan members traveling to Canton (now Guangzhou) to prepare for the imperial civil service examinations. Today, the complex houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, preserving and celebrating the region’s rich artistic heritage. The hall is best known for its breathtaking decorative artistry, which brings together the finest examples of traditional Guangdong folk craftsmanship. Every courtyard, pavilion, and corridor is adorned with elaborate motifs depicting historical legends, mythical creatures, flowers, birds, and scenes from Chinese opera, reflecting the exceptional creativity and craftsmanship of Lingnan artisans. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is an unmissable destination for anyone interested in Chinese history, architecture, and traditional folk art.

Honestly one of the coolest stops in Guangzhou. The place was built in the 1890s and every single surface is covered in intricate carvings, ceramic rooftop figures, and stonework, it’s almost overwhelming in the best way. The layout is really nice too, with courtyards and covered walkways connecting everything, so you can wander around at your own pace. Shame the weather was miserable when I went, I’d love to see those rooftop decorations catch some actual sunlight someday. Still very much worth it though. Cheap entry, central location, easy to spend a couple of hours here.
