Traveler reviews

  • George Syros

    ★★★★★a year ago

This gate, built in 1565, was dedicated to St. George, whose sculpture adorned it wonderfully for centuries. It survived sieges, earthquakes, and bombing, only to be... demolished in 1917! Nevertheless, the rest of the gate complex remains in considerably decent shape as it has been partially restored. At times, it hosts exhibits of artistic, cultural, or historical content. It served as one of the main gates of the late medieval city and was, of course, massively defended by the bastions flanking it. Easy to visit and very well worth it.

One of the few remaining Gates of the Venetian wall of heraklion that the local municipality haven't destroy completely, all through it is a miracle to find it open.. if you do then visit it... It is worth it.
