★★★★★2 months agoSpent a about 2 hours at the Thyssen Museum and honestly loved it. The collection is incredibly diverse — from classic masterpieces to modern art — and every room feels different from the last. It’s one of those museums where you can easily lose track of time just wandering around and discovering new favorite paintings. Definitely one of the best cultural experiences in Madrid and well worth visiting, even if you’re not usually a big museum person. Beautiful atmosphere, amazing art, and a perfect way to slow down and enjoy the city for a while.

★★★★★2 months ago"The Thyssen" is the third in the "Golden Triangle" of national art museums in the Spanish capital. The number of paintings on exhibit (more than 1,600) on its three floors of permanent collections (two with the collection of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and one with his wife Carmen's collection) is incredible, and spans from medieval religious iconography to contemporary art of 20th and 21st centuries. That scope means it includes many lesser known artists, and its private origins means that its many works by well-known artists tend to be lesser known works. But those are strengths more than weaknesses. It creates both a tremendous sweep of Euro-American art history and a chance to see works by artists in styles not usually associated with them. As an example, consider the first two pictures here of Georgia O'Keefe paintings--the first a floral painting well associated with her and the second an abstract sunset entitled "From the Plains II." Each of the collections is presented in chronological order if you follow the salas in sequence beginning on the top floor and moving down. There is some overlap in artists, so for example, Picasso's are found on both Piso 1 and Piso 0. Plan for a visit of several hours, or view the collections on separate visits. Admission is free on Mondays from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, but does not include special exhibits. Each work has a QR-code linking to information about it, and audio-guides are available for rent.
