★★★★★2 years agoThe church is located in Piazza San Paolo on the banks of the Arno and was built in the year 805 for the Vallombrosan monks. From 1063 it functioned as the cathedral church of Pisa during the construction of the Cathedral of the Duomo and for this reason it was called improperly until last century Old Cathedral, was restored and modified several times in the 11th and 12th centuries, the high altar was consecrated by Pope Eugene III on 16 October 1149 and precisely in that period the dome and the transept were added, from 1074 to 1475 it became the abbey church of the Vallombrosian monks.
