★★★★★2 years agoLocated on the northwest corner of People's Square, the Shanghai History Museum is dedicated to preserving the city's history. The collection focuses on the approximately one hundred years from the treaty opening of the port in 1843 to the communist take-over in 1949. Today, the Shanghai History Museum occupies the main building of the former Shanghai Race Club. The newly renovated and opened space retains much of the original building's architecture and interior design. If you have ever wondered what Old Shanghai was like, you can find the answer at the Shanghai History Museum. As an important cultural attraction, the it is well worth a visit.

★★★★★8 months agoThe Shanghai History Museum is located in the former Shanghai Race Club building on Nanjing Road West. It focuses on the city's development from the opening of its port in 1843 to the Communist takeover in 1949. The museum is a short walk from the People's Square metro station (Line 1, 2, and 8). The museum is housed in a stunning 1934 neoclassical building with a 10-story clock tower. The architectural details, including the Grand Staircase and Art Deco Hall, are major draws for visitors. The museum has over 30,000 items, including a bronze cannon from the First Opium War, a pair of bronze HSBC lions, and a Baizi bridal sedan chair.
