★★★★★9 months agoAs magical as one would hope. Take the time to enjoy the views from multiple angles and times. We really enjoyed Rick Steeves podcast about the canal as he talks you through a number of the buildings and important historical themes. As much as we did take photos, we spent much more time just soaking in the moments we had there. Riding the gondola ferry across was also a lot of fun. Make sure you go find a few of those crossings- you might decide that is enough of a gondola ride and save a lot of money- we did;)

★★★★★5 months agoUnmissable wherever you go, the Grand Canal is a wonderful place by day to explore more of Venice from the water. You'll see the houses rising above the water directly on the canal, often with their own private jetties. You'll appreciate the coolness and the breeze on the water when the temperature rises considerably in summer. It's also the easiest way to get to the things on your wish list. Or, set off for an evening of opera from your hotel on an authentic gondola and arrive in style. At night, the Grand Canal is truly enchanting with all the lights from the other boats on the water and the lights of the houses along the canal. If you're looking for romance, take a gondola with your sweetheart to a small restaurant and soak up the city's unique atmosphere. At sunset, the water turns a deep blue, as does the sky. With a cardigan in summer, the breeze on board is quite manageable. It's pure bliss. You can explore the Grand Canal not only from the water, but also from dry land.
