Leaving the vibrant city centre behind, a gentle and inviting path leads you up the historic slopes of Calton Hill. As you reach the crest, the striking stone pillars of the National Monument of Scotland rise before you like a dramatic, unfinished acropolis. Lush, grassy areas surround this iconic landmark, offering the perfect spot to sit down, relax, and unpack a picnic. From this elevated perch, you are gifted a heart-soothing moment as you gaze out over a panoramic view of the entire Edinburgh skyline and the sparkling Firth of Forth beyond. The other monuments very near to it are Nelson and Dugal Stewart are worth having a look.

Well worth the visit for the stunning views over the city. There’s a nice, easy walk up which is much more pleasant than taking the steps. At the top, you’ll find a café/restaurant with a great spot to sit and take it all in. The staff were a little hit-and-miss, and while the coffee was decent, it felt a bit pricey for the size. Overall though, it’s a lovely place to visit and definitely worth the trip for the scenery alone.
