★★★★★2 months agoAfter our tour of the Royal Palace and a nice lunch, Donkey and I were walking towards the main shopping street when a beautiful burst of colours caught our eye. We found ourselves drawn into Jogyesa Temple – the main temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and a peaceful spiritual center right in the middle of modern Seoul. At the entrance there is a large ceremonial drum where visitors can make a wish and strike it three times as a way to announce their arrival. Once inside, we were amazed by thousands of bright lanterns hanging across the courtyard – they created a stunning ceiling of light and colour that took our breath away. One of the best parts of our visit was meeting some local ladies at the temple. They were so funny and friendly and even though we could not speak the same language, they found wonderful ways to communicate with us. When explaining the zodiac animals they made animal sounds and acted them out physically, turning the lesson into a fun game of charades that had us laughing together. We chose to take part in the temple traditions by making an offering of 30000 KRW per person to ask for personal blessings. After writing our names and addresses on cards, something surprisingly modern happened – the staff laminated our cards then used a mechanical crane to lift and hang them high up among the lanterns. This wonderful mix of ancient spiritual traditions, modern practicality and warm local hospitality made our visit truly unforgettable. Jogyesa Temple is an essential place to visit for anyone wanting to connect with Korean culture on a deeper level. The colours are really cool and you not only just See it, but you can also sound the drum or go inside or even see a ceremony. So also interactive.
