The Church of São Francisco (Igreja de São Francisco) in Porto is nice to see from the outside, with an interesting Gothic facade. It sits right next to Palácio da Bolsa, so it’s easy to combine both stops. Worth a look even if you don’t go inside.

Amazing! How much wealth must have been in Portugal in the 1700s to perform such miracles… It ranks 2nd or 3rd among the richest churches I have visited in Europe. An interior full of gilded chapels, massive altar, carved wooden decorations on the ceiling and stone columns. You rarely get the chance to see something like this. The Episcopal Palace is equally rich and has many artifacts on display. And finally, the catacombs, the largest and most impressive I have seen. You are speechless.
